Hotel towels look better, feel better, and last longer — and part of that is how they're handled after laundering. Here's the exact method.

Step 1: Fold immediately after drying

Leaving towels in a pile after drying compresses the loops and creates permanent crease lines. Fold while still slightly warm from the dryer — the fibers are more pliable and will hold their shape without hard creases. If air-drying, fold once the towel is fully dry but before it stiffens. This single habit makes a visible difference in how towels look on a shelf or rack.

Step 2: The spa tri-fold method

This is the standard for luxury hotels and spas:
1. Lay the towel flat, long side horizontal.
2. Fold the bottom third up.
3. Fold the top third down over it (like a letter).
4. Fold in half widthwise, with the open edges facing the back.
The result is a clean rectangular stack with no raw edges visible. For display on a rack, stop at step 3 and drape over the bar with the folded edge facing out.

Step 3: Store with the folded edge facing out

When stacking on a shelf, place towels with the folded edge facing forward, not the open edges. This creates a uniform, clean appearance and prevents the loops from snagging on shelf edges. Stack no more than 4–5 towels high — excessive stacking compresses the bottom towels and flattens the pile over time.

Step 4: Store in a dry, ventilated space

Towels stored in enclosed, humid spaces (like under a bathroom sink with no airflow) develop mildew even when clean. Linen closets should have some airflow — a louvered door or a small gap is sufficient. If storing in a bathroom cabinet, ensure towels are completely dry before folding and storing. Even 5% residual moisture in a sealed space is enough to trigger mildew growth within 48 hours.

Step 5: The rolled towel display (for open shelving)

For open bathroom shelving or baskets, rolling is more practical than folding:
1. Fold the towel in thirds lengthwise (like a long rectangle).
2. Roll tightly from one end to the other.
3. Place seam-side down in the basket or on the shelf.
Rolled towels take up less space, are easier to grab, and create a spa-like visual. This method also reduces fold-line stress on the fibers compared to flat stacking.
