There's nothing worse than reaching for a towel after a shower and getting sandpaper instead. If your towels have gone stiff and scratchy, don't toss them yet — they can almost always be restored.

Why Do Towels Get Stiff?
Stiff towels usually come down to one of these culprits:
- Detergent buildup — too much detergent leaves residue that hardens in the fibers.
- Fabric softener — ironically, it coats fibers over time and makes them stiff.
- Hard water — mineral deposits bind to cotton and weigh the fibers down.
- Over-drying — high heat breaks down fibers and mats them together.
How to Restore Softness
Step 1: Wash with White Vinegar
Skip the detergent and add 1 cup of white vinegar to the drum. Run a full wash cycle on warm water. Vinegar breaks down buildup and dissolves mineral deposits without stressing the fibers. The smell disappears completely once dry.
Step 2: Follow with Baking Soda
Run a second cycle with ½ cup of baking soda — no detergent, warm water again. Do these in separate cycles, never mixed together. This combo deep-cleans the fibers and brings back that fluffy feel.
Step 3: Dry the Right Way
- Use medium heat, not high.
- Shake towels out before putting them in the dryer.
- Remove while slightly damp and let them finish air-drying.
- Add wool dryer balls to fluff the fibers naturally.
Keep Them Soft Going Forward
- Use less detergent than you think you need.
- Skip fabric softener entirely for towels.
- Don't leave wet towels sitting in the washer.
- Avoid overloading the machine — towels need room to rinse properly.
When It's Time to Upgrade
If your towels are thinning, pilling, or still rough after multiple attempts — it's time for new ones. Premium long-staple cotton towels stay softer for longer and hold up wash after wash.
