Foundation on your face towel. Mascara on your bath towel. It happens to everyone. The good news is that most makeup stains can be fully removed if you treat them the right way — and quickly.
The Golden Rule: Act Fast
Fresh stains are always easier to remove than dried ones. As soon as you notice a makeup stain, treat it before it sets into the fibers.
How to Remove Foundation & Liquid Makeup
- Blot, don't rub. Use a clean cloth to blot up as much of the stain as possible. Rubbing spreads it deeper into the fibers.
- Apply dish soap or liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain. These cut through oil-based makeup effectively.
- Gently work it in with your fingers and let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water — never hot, as heat sets the stain.
- Check before drying. If the stain remains, repeat before putting it in the dryer.
How to Remove Mascara & Eye Makeup
- Apply a small amount of micellar water or makeup remover to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Gently blot with a clean cloth.
- Follow up with dish soap and cold water rinse.
- Wash as normal.
How to Remove Lipstick
- Scrape off any excess with a spoon or dull knife — don't smear it.
- Apply rubbing alcohol to the stain and blot gently.
- Follow with dish soap and a cold water rinse.
- Wash as normal.
For Stubborn Stains: Baking Soda Paste
Mix baking soda with a small amount of dish soap to form a paste. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. This works well on set-in stains that didn't come out on the first try.
What to Avoid
- Hot water — sets stains permanently into the fabric.
- Rubbing aggressively — damages fibers and spreads the stain.
- Drying before the stain is gone — heat from the dryer will lock the stain in for good.
